Bottom's Up!

I have found an answer for the August heat in Alabama!

Pay attention, my blogger and pastor friend, Rick in Oklahoma! This story is for both of us!

The story comes from Tokyo, Japan. It seems that the hottest season of the year in Japan is just beginning. So, if it is hot in Japan, that can only mean one thing—it is eel season.

So, bottom’s up!

A canned drink called “Unagi Nobori,” or “Surging Eel,” made by Japan Tobacco Inc., hit their nation’s stores in August just ahead of Japan’s annual eel-eating season.

Many Japanese believe eating eel boosts stamina in hot weather. The fizzy, yellow-colored drink contains extracts from the head and bones of eel and five vitamins—A, B1, B2, D and E—contained in the fish.

The Japanese particularly like to eat eel on traditional eel days, which fall on July 24 and August 5 this year.

Demand for eel is so high that Japan has been hit by scores of eel fraud cases, including a recent high-profile incident in which a government ministry publicly scolded two companies for mislabeling eel imported from China as being domestically grown.

Well, does anyone have any connections to a black market friend in Japan? Knowing what the “Dog Days of Summer” are like in Alabama, I think I should stock up now. And, if my Oklahoma blogging buddy is correct, there’s bound to be a market for this stuff in his hot state.

I’ll try to track down a supply and send out to any one who wants to try some, of course, there’ll be a nominal 125% markup on the price!

So, if eel-juice became available in the States, would you try it? Or better yet, how long do you think it would take for the folks on the Left Coast to discover this and make it the hottest fad in the country among young adults age 18–25?

  1. No thanks. I'll stick to water or the occasional lemonade. Enjoy your eel. Puke!

  2. I had eel several times in Asia. Not too bad. But here in Oklahoma, we prefer rattlesnake!

Actually, we'll try about anything to keep cool... I was thinking as i was brushing my teeth this morning, (in what felt like warm tea water) that I sure love that time of year when water comes out of the tap so cold that it hurts your teeth!

    Thanks for the shout-out!

  3. 3 words sum it up for me: NOT A CHANCE! 'Nuff said. I'll take the heat and like it before I will take eel.

  4. I'm not a risk taker on food and drinks. I like to stick to the basics. But, I am the type to buy it and then let this guy at my church try it. He's like the kid on the LIFE cereal commercial; excpet his name isn't Mikey, it's Clint. He would definitely try eel and probably boast about it being good.

I'm with you...no eel for me!
