Ever Get Tired Just Thinking About Something?

The following story makes me tired. Literally, it does.

A Vermont man who is planning to ride in a 508-mile bicycle race in California is taking the long way to the starting line. He’s riding his bicycle to California. From Vermont. I told you, I’m tired after reading those words. How about you?

Joe Desena, 39, left Monday from Vermont on his 3,000-mile trip west, which is expected to take about two weeks. His goal is to be in the field on October 4 for the Furnace Creek 508, which goes from Santa Clarita, California., to Twentynine Palms. Desena, who has participated in dozens of adventure races, triathlons, and ultramarathons, says there’s no better way to get in shape for the race than to bike across country.

Wow! I’m impressed with his training. I’m not sure he needs to get into much better shape, but then again, I’m not a cyclist. I’m sure my blogger buddy Bill can weigh in on the discussion. But, if it takes him 14 days to ride from Vermont to California, that will be an average of 214 miles a day. Folks, that’s a long ways to drive a day, much less pedal a bicycle.

Do you ever see yourself setting out on an adventure such as this?

  1. Steve: I guarantee that I would never make it in two weeks. Not even on a good day! that dude must be in phenomenal shape. My dream before I turned 50 was to go cross country with some friends and do it in 6 weeks. It didn't happen. :( And at 55 (soon to be 56) I don't see it happening either. BTW: I like that picture.

  2. Bill...this post was just for you...and do you think the man is in great shape! WOW!

I figured you would like the picture. I snapped it of you at your last competition, then had Karma to make it look better--she did a great job! :)

  3. What a rush!!!

I would love to do something like a triathalon except I hate to run. Blah! But I am gearing up for the event of my life. It will take years of preparation, but when I am done I plan to be the best medical missionary I can be. I'm so pumped!!

  10. Thinking about it doesn't make me as tired as looking at that pictures gives me a headache! ;-)

I think I'd like to DRIVE across America. Or maybe even one day motorcycle across, but definitely not on a bike.

  12. Yep that's a picture of me alright...in my dreams. The real one of me is somewhere in the totally blurred stuff. You will find me at the back of the pack.

  13. Steve: I just read a cycling mag last night. There is a race called RAAM (Race Across America). The winning rider did it in 8 days, 23 hours, 33 minutes. An average of 13.98 mph. The next closest was 9 days, 17 hours, 29 minutes. An average of 12.91 mph. The longest in the top 5 took 10 days. So it is doable but certainly not by me!!!

  14. I am absolutely amazed and impressed when I read stories like this! It is amazing how God created bodies that can do something like this!

I wonder what made the difference for the first guy? After all, he finished the race in basically a day shorter?

Bill...just curious, on these trips, do they sleep and not count that time in the race? Or, does this include sleeping time?

See how little I know about cycling...
