Month/Day/Year --100 Words (Part 1)

[This is part 1 of a 5 part mini series dealing with how we spend our days. The second part will come tomorrow. Part three will be shared over the weekend. Part 4 will come Monday. Part 5 will come next Tuesday. Stick with me to end on this.]

Month/Day/Year.

Three things we refer to every day.

For example, today is April 15, 2010.

Tax day in the United States. The day we are reminded how much government cost. It’s the day we are reminded that government entitlements are paid by someone—the 52% of Americans who pay taxes!

What will you do with today?

Scramble to complete tax forms?

Work hard at a job that doesn’t thrill you, for people who don’t appreciate you?

Grumble about paying taxes?

Or, will you say, “This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it!”

Guarantee--100 Words

Guarantee.

I think that word used to mean something.

Two men shook hands. Their word was their bond. No lawyers needs. No paperwork required. Just a handshake.

People used to keep their word. It was a given. To do otherwise was the exception.

Not now.

Lately, as I’ve watched my wife look for employment and as I’ve gone through a few transitions of my own, I’ve watched how few people keep their word. They promise to call. Then don’t. They promise jobs. They promise hope. They offer security. They even offer a hand.

Then, nothing.

Where have the guarantees gone?

Employment--100 Words

Employment.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “The crowning fortune of a man is to be born to some pursuit which finds him employment and happiness, whether it be to make baskets, or broad swords, or canals, or statues, or songs.”

Not sure employment is a “crowning fortune.” I’ll let others debate that.

Employment, however, is vital. It puts food on the table. A house overhead. Gas in car.

My wife has employment concerns. That’s not strong enough. Frustration? Disdain? Getting closer. Disgust? There you go! Wish people hired on merit. Not on who you know.

We don’t know the right people!
