Praise--425 Words

Praise.

Ken Thomas wrote a hymn at a time when the established church believed only Scripture should be sung as hymns—-with a special emphasis given to the Psalms. Some church leaders considered it sinful and blasphemous to write new lyrics for church music. It was almost like they were adding words to the Scriptures.

In that atmosphere, Ken wrote this and several other hymns for the boys at Winchester College, with strict instructions that they use them only in their rooms, for private devotions.

Today, we know the last stanza far better than the others. It may be the most frequently used piece of music in worship. Read the hymn from the beginning. Don’t skip ahead. And, as you come to the end, sing out in praise.

At Ken’s request, his hymn was sung at his funeral, fittingly held at sunrise.

“Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

“Thy precious time misspent, redeem,
Each present day thy last esteem,
Improve thy talent with due care;
For the great day thyself prepare.

“By influence of the Light divine
Let thy own light to others shine.
Reflect all Heaven’s propitious ways
In ardent love, and cheerful praise.

“In conversation be sincere;
Keep conscience as the noontide clear;
Think how all seeing God thy ways
And all thy secret thoughts surveys.

“Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who all night long unwearied sing
High praise to the eternal King.

“All praise to Thee, who safe has kept
And hast refreshed me while I slept
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake
I may of endless light partake.

“Heav’n is, dear Lord, where’er Thou art,
O never then from me depart;
For to my soul ’tis hell to be
But for one moment void of Thee.

“Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;
Disperse my sins as morning dew.
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

“Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say,
That all my powers, with all their might,
In Thy sole glory may unite.

“I would not wake nor rise again
And Heaven itself I would disdain,
Wert Thou not there to be enjoyed,
And I in hymns to be employed.

“Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.”

Boring Worship--100 Words--Part 3

[Today, I continue a mini-series on worship. Truthfully, I don't know how many blogs I will write about this subject. Maybe three, maybe more. I'll just let my heart and mind be my guide. As always, your comments are welcome.]

Boring worship.

Boring worship can be found in Baptist churches. Methodist churches. Non-denominational churches.

Boring worship can be found in new churches. Centuries old churches.

Boring worship can happen in churches where a lot of screaming and yelling takes place.

It can happen in churches where the liturgy wouldn’t allow screaming to take place.

Boring worship happens.

When you put lipstick on a pig, you have decorated pork chops and bacon. Nothing more.

I don’t care what clerical lipstick you put on worship, if it’s not about worshipping Jesus Christ as Savior, you have nothing more than a cheap show.

Aging--100 Words

Aging.

Somewhere from the time we are two to when we are grown, we lose the excitement of growing up. As adults, we especially lose the joy of birthdays.

What 10 year old doesn’t want to be 20? But, what 40 year old can’t wait to be 50?

None that I know.

Who wants to get the “Official Welcome” to AARP?

Who is excited about the aging process?

Even Christians, who say that know they’ll head to heaven after death, seem to be in no hurry to get there.

What about you? Aging is good? Or, aging can wait? Why?

Fake--100 Words

Fake.

Our world is filled with fake.

We have fake eyelashes. Teeth. Sugar. Boobs. Butt enhancers. And, slimmers to make our butt smaller.

We have fake tans. And fake smiles.

Our world is filled with fake.

Christians have filled the church with fake as well.

We mouth words to songs without singing. We close our eyes while others pray, yet never utter a breath of prayer ourselves. We sit back while others preach, yet never proclaim that Jesus is our Lord.

Jesus said, “I’d rather have you either hot or cold. Not fake. I’ll vomit fake out of my mouth.”

Hair--100 Words

Hair.

On this very stormy day, I’ve been thinking about hair.

Our building superintendent and I came in the building together today. In the middle of Ida blowing rain and wind.

He said, with a grin on his face, “This weather does a number on my hair.”

What’s a bald man to say in return? Simple. “Mine too!”

We shared a brief smile and laugh.

People like to make “hair” jokes with bald guys.

What if bald guys made “fat” jokes to them? Or, “height” jokes. Or, “ugly” jokes.

Not PC. I get it. Why are bald guys fair game?

Choices--100 Words

Choices.

Do choices ever come easily? If they do, are they really worth it?

Recently, I found two great quotes to put facing choices into perspective.

First, Denis Waitley said, “There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.”

Then secondly, Robert Fritz said, “If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise.”

I hate compromise. And, had never thought of limiting choices as compromise.

But, I think Waitley was right.

8--100 Words

The number eight is an interesting number.

In many countries, the number symbolizes wealth.

Did you know the 2008 Olympics began at 8 minutes and 8 seconds past 8 PM?

In baseball, Cal Ripken wore the number. Yogi Berra and Carl Yastrzemski did also.

Until last season, Kobe Bryant wore it for the Los Angeles Lakers.

In football, Troy Aiken wore it for the Dallas Cowboys.

And, who can forget Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and his number 8 race car.

But, today, the number 8 carries another meaning. 8 years ago today, I started my current job.

Happy anniversary to me.

Waiting--100 Words

American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson made two great observations.

“How much of human life is lost in waiting.”

“The world is all gates, all opportunities, strings of tension waiting to be struck.”

Waiting.

I’ll admit it. I’m not good at waiting.

I’d rather hurry. Or decide. Or move forward. Or be told “no.”

But waiting? Who wants to do that?

But, I find myself waiting this week.

It’s Tuesday. But Friday’s coming.

I’m hoping, on Friday, the wait will be over.

If it isn’t, at least I’m hoping for some news, much anticipated news.

So, until then, prayers.
