Back during the democratic primaries, one of the major news stories concerned a Catholic priest who mocked Senator Hillary Clinton. Remember the sermon? During a sermon at Senator Barack Obama’s church, Rev. Michael Pfleger pretended that he was Mrs. Clinton crying over “a black man stealing my show” and the fact that Mrs. Clinton is “entitled to be president because I am white.”
Well, his sermon didn’t go over well with Barack Obama, the national media, or with Cardinal Francis George, his boss. Cardinal Francis George suspended Rev. Pfleger for a month.
Now, Pfleger is back! This past Sunday, Pfleger told a cheering congregation at St. Sabina church that he will not let his faults make him “play it safe or become silent.”
I am told that the ushers at St. Sabina handed out fliers with a silhouette of boxer Muhammad Ali and the words “Ain’t nothing like a comeback.”
What do you think about The Rev. Michael Pfleger? What did you think about his sermon at Obama’s church? What about his suspension? Was it long enough? Did he deserve more or less? What about his promise of not playing it safe or becoming silent?
I’d really like to hear your input on this one!
I've decided to take a walk to explore the world around me. If you'd like to come along, I'll share my thoughts with you on what I've found on this journey.

Ready or Not, Pfleger Is Back!

I think both he and Mr. Wright are disgusting. (How's that for an opinion?) Personally, I have better things to preach about and to spend my time in the pulpit than rambling on about garbage that amounts to nothing. Democrat or Republican. Jesus is neither. Whatever happened to preach Christ and Him crucified?
ReplyDeleteBill, you are much too timid, my brother. You've got to learn to speak your mind!
ReplyDeleteI don't care if a pastor is Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, or jumps pews each Sunday, the message from the pulpit must be about Jesus. How dare this man stand in the pulpit and preach Democratic (or Republican) messages! What an affront to the name of Jesus!
I'm rather timid myself!
I think he had better be concerned about the IRS. I don't like politics in church even if I like the candidate.
ReplyDeleteKevin,
ReplyDeleteAMEN!
Steve
I know Father Pfleger. I'm not a close friend, but I am a friend of his.
ReplyDeleteWhile I would NEVER condone his "message" at Trinity United Church of Christ several weeks ago, this man has already "paid" for his crime--if that's what someone wants to call it.
He is the ONLY Priest in this city that will stand up to the THUGS and BIMBOS in a dangerous neighborhood, and dare them to threaten his congregation or his people anymore.
The Faith Community at St Sabina is one of only THREE local Catholic parishes that operate in the black financially every fiscal year.
St Sabina is a "CINO" Catholic in Name Only congregation.
Father Mike preaches Christ, and Him Crucified.
While I have disagreed with his politics more than once, I'm glad the city of Chicago has someone with his courage and fortitude as a resident.
St Sabina's is by no means a wealthy church...it's actually just the opposite. But that congregation, lead by it's very able pastor, continually ministers to their community.
I wish there were more churches like this one.
Poor Francis Cardinal George would have a stroke, if there were.
One more thing, Chicago is the second largest Catholic Archdiocese in the nation (behind Los Angeles), and when only three parishes operate in the black financially, that says something about the condition of the "catholics" in this town.
ReplyDeleteSo, Phil, how does a man who preaches Christ crucifed and resurrected move from that to politics and imitating Hillary Clinton? Did the media portray him in an unfair way? What's his reaction to the national media attention? He seems very "arrogant" in many of the statements I've read from him.
ReplyDeletePhil, do you feel his suspension was too long? Not deserved? Should there have even been a punishment for what he said?
ReplyDeleteSorry it took so long for me to answer this one, but here's how I feel:
ReplyDeleteHe made a serious error in personal judgment with his completely false spoof of Hillary Clinton. It was, at best, in bad taste...and he should have known better.
He isn't an arrogant man...but he doesn't let the Cardinal nor any of the local politicians slide when they should be paying attention to what's happening around them.
His heart is so big that he adopted several children--and saw one of his "adopted children" gunned down by some gang bangers here in Chicago--less than two blocks from the St Sabina facilities.
I felt that his suspension was very adequate for the situation. I feel that he owes a tremendous apology to both Senator Clinton, her supporters (of which I am not one), and to the Body of Christ at large. He brought embarrassment to the entire body of Christ here in the USA.
As far as "punishment"...I'm not sure...I do my best to leave those kinds of determinations to God, and Him alone.
